Best Travel Tips For Kids

It’s no surprise parents are anxious about travelling with kids! Given their sometimes-explosive personality and the unfamiliarity of it all, things can go south in the bat of an eye. Still, this is no reason you should refrain from the idea. On the contrary, you just need to familiarise yourself with the best travel tips for kids!

Of course, travelling with children is an adventure before you even leave the house, but that’s what parents usually don’t like. We’re a young family who loves to explore, but we also know the reality of parenting on the go. Getting out and about with our little toddler Kaimani can feel like an expedition with all the planning, packing, and general kid-wrangling. Well, it doesn’t have to be a hassle. That’s why we are here. To help you keep your sanity, here is a list of travel tips for kids to make your journey incredible!

  1. Pack Like a Pro

Packing for a family can feel like a sport. Here’s how we make it work:

  • List It Out – Start with a basic packing list on your phone or notebook. We include sections for essentials (diapers, wipes, extra clothes) and then add extras like toys, books, or snacks.
  • Pack Outfits by Day – For each kid, pack full outfits in separate zip-lock bags by day. This way, you avoid going through suitcases to find a shirt and shorts that match (when you’re in a time crunch).
  • Essentials Bag – Have a dedicated bag for essentials that always stays with you – think diapers, wipes, snacks, and a change of clothes for unexpected messes.

Remember this when you pack: if it’s unnecessary, it stays behind. That minimalist mindset keeps the load lighter and reduces chaos!

2. Keep the Kiddos Comfortable and Entertained

A key to a successful family trip is content kids. Here are some entertaining travel tips for kids to make everything smoother:

  • Bring Small Surprises – We love to stash away little, inexpensive toys, stickers, crayons, or small figures. Every few hours, we bring out something new as a mini-surprise  which works wonders to curb boredom.
  • Go for Screen Time (If This Works for You) – Don’t feel guilty about the iPad or other screens. Download their favourite shows or games so you’re prepared when the restlessness kicks in. Even if you have limited screen time at home, remember travel days are different.
  • The Power of Snacks – Snacks can be the secret sauce of happy kids. Pack easy, mess-free snacks like apple slices, crackers, or granola bars. Also, consider a favourite treat they don’t get every day it can work as a good bribe for staying calm!

3. Think Ahead for the Trip Survival

We’ve done both flights and long car rides with our son Kaimani. While each has its pros and cons, you can manage them if you prepare the right way:

  • For Flights – Bring lollipops or chewing gum for older kids to help with ear pressure changes. For babies, feeding or a pacifier during takeoff and landing helps keep their little ears comfortable.
  • For Road Trips – Car naps are golden! Plan longer drives around nap times if possible. We’ve found a mix of activities (colouring books, audiobooks, and yes, some screen time) to make hours in the car more bearable for everyone.

A gentle nudge in the right direction from us: If you decide to fly, check if you can get early boarding. It’s so much easier to get settled in before the plane fills up and to have overhead bin space for all your bags.

4. Choose Accommodations Wisely

Where you stay can make or break your trip. In other words, as your next travel tip for kids, you need to learn how to become a booking pro! When we book our accommodation, we look for these key features:

  • Suites or Rentals – A little extra space goes a long way. This can either be a family suite or an Airbnb  the added room gives everyone some space and a kitchen makes meals easier on the budget (and the picky eaters!).
  • Kid-Friendly Amenities – Some hotels offer free cribs, play areas, or kid menus. It’s worth it to call ahead to check. We’ve stayed in places with mini-fridges and microwaves, and it made a big difference for snacks and milk.
  • Near Attractions – Location is everything. Be close to parks, restaurants, or the main sights. This will cut down on transportation time!

5. Slow Down and Embrace Flexibility

The biggest lesson of travel with kids and babies? Let go of rigid schedules. Kids aren’t always on board with early wake-up calls, strict sightseeing, or constant on-the-go energy. So, we’ve adopted a slower pace:

  • Plan One Big Activity a Day – Rather than cramming our day with things to see and do, we plan for one big activity. It allows us to go at a slower pace.
  • Have Backup Plans – Kids are unpredictable. That’s why we keep a list of backup ideas like indoor play areas or a kid-friendly café just in case we need a change of plans. It keeps the trip stress-free and enjoyable.

6. Prepare for the Unexpected

Travelling with kids means expecting the unexpected. Here’s how we stay on top of things:

  • Mini First Aid Kit – A small bag with band-aids, antiseptic wipes, and any essential medications can be a lifesaver.
  • Extra Snacks and Clothes – Always pack a little more than you think you’ll need. We’ve learned the hard way that snacks and changes of clothes are priceless!
  • Stay Flexible with Itineraries – Sometimes, the kids just aren’t in the mood for sightseeing. On those days, just go with the flow choose either a park or a nap.

7. Enjoy the Ride

Travelling with kids can be messy, chaotic, and exhausting. But it’s also filled with incredible moments. Some of our best memories are the unplanned ones – the goofy dances, spontaneous detours to check out a random playground, and their little laughs that can fill your heart with joy! So, if there’s one thing we’ve learned, it’s to just enjoy it. Embrace the journey, roll with the hiccups, and savor the little moments along the way.

As you can see, no matter what you do, children will make up for a very fun time! So give yourselves the freedom to do things your way, but also give them freedom and do things their way too! We are slowly getting the hang of parenthood – and we will share every step of the way with you!
