What to See and Do in Samoa: A Traveler’s Guide

One of the very first beaches I saw from the airport in Samoa

Planning your dream trip to Samoa? Here’s the ultimate travel guide, including must-visit spots, local eats, and insider tips to make the most of your adventure!

Samoa sure is a lesser-known destination so, naturally, I had to do my research before choosing it as my next vacay spot. As I did so… the scroll-stopper for me was its other name, “The Treasured Islands”. It was only when I searched up photos that I realized why it’s given this name.

But, hold on. The natural, rugged beauty is INSANE. Google searches revealed beaches, palm trees, and the famous To Sua Trench. It can’t be that beautiful, I would think to myself.

That’s where the curiosity kicked in. I knew only a visit to Samoa would give me my answer: is it photoshop, or is it really that stunning?

At this point, I immediately booked a trip. And I couldn’t be happier with my decision! Samoa has since become one of my favourite spots; I can’t wait to head back, this time with my partner Joseph and son Kaimani.

If you’re planning the same and need some travel inspo I’m here to give you the lowdown, so you can skip the trial-and-error phase and get straight to the good stuff 😊

A Little About Samoa

Samoa is located in the South Pacific at a short flight of 6 hours from Sydney, Australia. (The doable flight time was a perk for me, but I’d head there even if it took 30 hours plus!). Samoa has two main islands, Upolu and Savai’i. Both offer serene beaches, lush waterfalls, and a fannntastic local life!

A special mention for the culture in the region, rightfully earning it the name “Cradle of Polynesia”. Everywhere you go, you will see traditional fales (open-sided houses) and hear the sounds of fiafia (cultural performances). Not to miss the art of tattooing an age-old Samoan practice.

One of the many beautiful places in Samoa.

Best Things to Do in Samoa

To-Sua Ocean Trench

There was one thing I was looking forward to the most and it was the Ocean Trench. “To Sua” quite literally means a giant swimming hole. This is a 30 meter-deep trench filled with crystal clear seawater. And when this glistens in the sunlight, the view is a class apart!

As much as I wanted to walk down the ladder, I froze at the sight of it. I must admit, it was a little intimidating 😅 But thanks to a lovely Australian lady and her grandkids, I was convinced to take the plunge (literally!). And it was really the best decision ever.

The Place That Convinced Me To Go To Samoa

Apia Markets

Number 2 on my list was the Apia markets and they didn’t disappoint. The Apia fish market is super close to the pier; you’ll find the air filled with the smell of seafood. Plus, the fishmongers are really friendly. They gave me insights on their catch + let me take pictures.

I also enjoyed the fresh tropical fruits at Fugalei Market. And not to forget the drinking coconuts, called Niu! Finally, I picked up a kava bowl from the Savalalo Flea Market. This market is great for souvenirs (read: Samoan crafts).

Lalomanu Beach

This is the classic spot for a beach holiday. I loved setting everything aside and simply laying back on the pristine white sand. And, of course, taking a dip in the crystal-clear waters. The special part of my visit was a stay at a beach fale.

Robert Louis Stevenson Museum

A guide showed me and my group insights into the artifacts at this museum. These basically reflect the life of the renowned Scottish author during his final years. Right next to the museum is Mount Vaea, where Stevenson is buried. Hiking to his tomb can give you scenic views along the way.

A Fiafa Night

A Fiafa night was deffo a highlight of my Samoa experience! I headed to the Taumeasina Island Resort, where we first enjoyed dinner while overlooking the ocean. I really enjoyed the lusami this is taro leaves baked in coconut cream and roasted pig 😋 As the dinner concluded, the entertainment began with a graceful siva dance. But the best was yet to come: siva afi, a mesmerizing fire knife dance! At the end, we were also invited to join the performers on stage 😁

Papaseea Sliding Rocks

If you love water slides and nature, you’re gonna get the best of both worlds here. The smooth rock formations have flowing water creating natural slides. At the bottom is a refreshing pool.

What to Eat in Samoa

When I say Samoa’s cuisine is absolutely a dream, I mean:

  • Oka I’a—a raw fish salad marinated in citrus juice + mixed with coconut cream, onions, and vegetables
  • Fa’apapa—a sweet bread made from coconut milk
  • Sapasui—Vermicelli noodles with beef and veggies
  • Panikeke—deep-fries dough balls. They’re crispy on the outside and soft on the inside!
  • Pisua—a dessert made from tapioca pearls cooked in coconut milk
Oka I’a- Raw Fish

As you’ve guessed Samoans love coconut milk. But that’s not it; they’re also huge fans of time-honoring cooking methods. And you’ll understand when you try a meal 😉

You can enjoy these delicacies at Samoan restaurants, but you definitely don’t want to miss the little food shops. I’m a huge foodie, and I can really vouch for these. Just keep an eye out for those roadside stalls!

Where to Stay in Samoa

When in Samoa, you’ll find quite a few options to stay. After all, where you stay has a big say in your overall experience. Some top favorites are…

Taumeasina Island Resort

This is a luxury resort with a sandy beach and a stunning lagoon. The rooms are beautiful just like the ocean views you’ll get!

Taufua Beach Fales

As I mentioned earlier, fales give you the perfect Samoan experience. And with stunning water views, what more could you possibly ask for?

Le Lagoto Resort and Spa

This is a boutique resort a place I’d recommend if you’re looking to cool off after a day of exploring. You can relax with body scrubs at the spa or unwind in a hammock surrounded by a tropical garden. It keeps getting better, you see.

Sheraton Samoa Beach Resort

This is, again, a stunning beachfront resort. You can enjoy a treatment at their Manaia Polynesian Spa. Or perhaps rest near the lagoon. Also the Fiafia Cultural Night on Fridays is unmissable! The fire dance performance will have you hooked 😉
